Outfit Staples

Right now, there are a few accessories that I cannot be without.
PEARLS
I have this fake-o long "pearl" necklace that was left behind in my boyfriend's flat. Goodness knows why, I think one of them was cross-dressing for a party or something. Never mind! I have claimed them for my own now, and we are inseparable.
SCHOOL SCARF
Kind of wanting to start a collection of old school/university scarves. I got this one from Armstrongs Vintage in Edinburgh, it's big and wooly and not overly thick. I am quite enamoured with the idea of creating my own "school uniform", a la Blair Waldorf, I think I always have been. Next on the list: school ties.
WINGED EYELINER
I bought MAC's liquid liner a week or so ago. It is my favourite, as it has absolutely ridiculous staying power, and I am notorious for forgetting I have makeup on and rubbing/touching/whatever my eyes. Plus, it is the blackest of black. I would wear it eternally if it weren't for the fact that my skin needs a breather every so often. On my way to perfecting the feline flick at the corners.
What are your top three style staples?

A Style Direction, Part 1

image from thank you, ok
These days I am finding it harder and harder to piece together a cohesive ensemble. I have certain items that are so easily married, and others that repel each other like opposing magnets. I feel that my outfits are lacking in that certain something. I've begun to realise, through the mess of impulse buys and old favourites, that the "certain something" is me. Even more difficult than the putting together of an outfit is the cultivation of a cohesive style.
I feel that blogs can be tricksy creatures. At one moment you feel overpowered with inspiration: oh my goodness! That coat! That bag! It surely is a must have! The next minute, I'm beginning to wonder whether it was the coat or bag I was seduced by, or simply that the blogger modelling these items is traipsing through Paris, on her way to a fashion show. It's such an old truth in fashion: sometimes, the only reason you want something, is to make you more like that certain someone who has it. Perhaps if I don a sheer shirt I'll suddenly have the legs of Rumi Neely? Maybe these sunglasses will give me the captivating features of Jane Aldrige? Of course, it's all nonsense. The only clothes that are really going to make us look fabulous are the clothes that suit us, and bring out our own best features, not the ones that hold false promises of transforming us into someone else.
With the creeping realisation that most of my clothes in my wardrobe didn't reflect me, I began to wonder: who is my inner stylist? Where the hell was she when I bought this!? What does she wear? How can I channel her at all times? I believe it's a rather difficult task to find your own fashion guru, but she is definitely there. She is whispering to you through your wardrobe, living in the fabric, and hiding in the magazine clippings underneath your bed.
As enamoured as I am with Fairisle sweaters, grandfather cardigans, swinging maxi skirts or even denim shorts, they just aren't me. I am neither a boho gyspy-princess, nor a minimalist coveter of structured avant-garde designer pieces. I am not a slave to Topshop, but neither do I insist on wearing vintage.
So, who am I?
images via pinterest
Fashion is very visual - and, like most people, I'm sure, I have a collection of images that inspire me. I looked through a selection and tried to pick out recurring themes. Here is what I found: nipped in waists; froofy skirts; leopard print accessories; massive knitted scarves; tartan skirts; bouffant, luxurious hair; long, knee- or thigh-high socks; black mary janes; glitter manicures; lace and tulle; layered chain necklaces; velvet blazers; embellished tights; nude lips; strong eyebrows. All in all: a magpie's fantasy.
The next step was to put these aesthetics in a big melting-pot and stir it all together, until a glorious style with great direction emerged. But if we're dealing in metaphors here (and man, as an English student, I love me some contrived metaphors), then the aesthetics are merely the sugar and chocolate chips of this sartorial cookie dough, and the main ingredients are the Style Icons (or are they just the eggs? I'm not entirely sure. Maybe the metaphors are overcomplicating things).
Metaphorical cookies aside, time and time again the stylish women of the world have reeled off their lists of iconic figures that inspire their looks: Kate, Audrey, Marilyn, Ashley and Mary-Kate, Alexa, Coco, Carrie... I can safely say that as stylish as these ladies are, I am not that... bothered (!) about them.
Talking about Style Icons reminds me of the question: "Who's your hero?" People will often answer with either "my mum" or "my dad" (my hero? I always used to answer this question with "Bob Marley", and one time I wrote a whole essay in primary school about how it was "the people who invented the Hubble Space Telescope" for some reason...), but the truth is that you can never look up to one single person - there are different aspects of different people that we admire. This is how I look at the "Style Icon". There are different people that serve different purposes. As I contemplate who my icons are, I like to think that they provide different layers of my look.
images via pinterest
I'm going to go for three different layers. A strong, beautiful base, encompassing underwear to make-up and hair, this is the real beauty that underlies every outfit. Think natural glamour, elegantly put-together, with an edge of bed-head and kohl. I think that good style icons for this layer are old-school Hollywood starlets, with their perfectly arched eyebrows and beautifully coiffed hair, exuding just the right amount of innocence and experience. Think Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Julie Christie... or if you want to go for a modern influence, possible icons include Gwen Stefani, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman. The next layer up is the actual clothes, the influencing style that nudges you in the right direction, inspiring you and helping you choose what to wear and how to style it. Really, you could go for anyone/anything here... possible influences range from Daisy Lowe to David Bowie, Sherlock Holmes to Cher (!?), it's totally up to you. Finally, the last layer is the icing on the cake: accessories. Having completed the base of the look, it's time to decorate and embellish things - and do so lavishly. Consider: Catherine Baba and her stacks of cuffs encircling her wrists, her head wrapped up in a turban; Her Royal Majesty The Queen, with a pair of pastel gloves and matching hat, or, duh, rocking the crown jewels (I like to imagine that on rainy days she sticks on the crown and fist-pumps, sceptre in hand, to Beyoncé); Karl Lagerfeld, with his dangerously dark aviators and monochromatic tie, silver rings adorning his hands.
There are no real rules - as usual, I'm making things up as I go along but I like the idea of these layers, I think it helps clarify things a little. Of course, more layers could be added, if you wanted to dedicate your footwear exclusively to Lady Gaga, or your coats to Lara of Doctor Zhivago. For now, I'm sticking with three. And who are my top three icons for this upcoming season?
I'm keeping this for the next post! Please share your all-time favourite Style Icons - no matter who they are! Extra points for super-obscurity.

Greetings From Reykjavik!

Today is our last day in Iceland. It's been a helluva trip - nature, coming at me from every angle! Waterfalls, volcanoes, glaciers, you get the picture. Yesterday we moved from the countryside to the capital. Reykjavik has an amazing collection of shops, it's not like any other city centre. I have not spied a single franchise anywhere! There are so many independent shops and vintage stores, you are guaranteed to get an original here.
I swooped down on this pair of leopard-print booties with great enthusiasm. They are ridiculously comfortable and I plan on living in them as soon as I get back to Edinburgh.
Photos of rural Iceland to come!

Icelandic Capsule Wardrobe

...of my dreams! So as I mentioned in a previous post, I'm jetting off to Iceland on Friday, and am very excited about it. After that - no more escapades abroad for a good while! I'm going with my family, we'll be staying in a small house in the Icelandic countryside for a few days, driving round and looking at waterfalls and volcanic phenomena and what have you. I am yet to pack, but should probably get on it, considering I've only got one full day before I hit the airport. I'm so glad it's only a two-and-a-half hour flight! Majorly fed up of long hauls after America!
Entertaining myself, I pieced together a dream wardrobe for Iceland. It lacks a certain practicality, I'll admit - no waterproofs, no walking boots (!).

Hope you are all having a good week!

I've been burying myself in revolutions and wars, revising for my European History exam on Monday. Soon I'll be finished 2nd year for good (!), and in less than a couple of weeks time I'll be on holiday! I'll save where I'm going for another post, though ;)
So I've done a little shopping today, trying to get my summer wardrobe sorted out. I have been searching for the perfect sheer blouse for ages, and I found this lovely version at Miss Selfridge. Also on my wishlist have been these cats eye sunglasses from Urban Outfitters for all of... two days? They are love love lovely, the perfect flirty shape for summer.
I've got so much to do before I head off abroad on the 26th, I have exactly one week to get all my stuff sorted out! Maybe I'll write a post about preparing for travelling? If you have any ideas, let me know!

DIY Flower Crown
Posted by
Olivia
I don't know about you, but every May my brain suddenly raises everything up a gear and I go into Creative Overdrive. This is mostly due to the fact that I've got exams to study for, and every atom of me is tempting me with new songs to write or new projects to start, begging me not to sit down in front of my books and actually revise. So far I have cut up and bleached a pair of jeans, dyed a t-shirt an unsuccessful off-white attempt at lavender, and constructed this flower crown you see above. I was going for that faded polaroid Marc by Marc Jacobs look with these photos.
Normally with everything I attempt (such as bleaching the ends of my hair), I have two rounds: round one is an excited, innocent attempt and usually features many realisations that I'm doing things the wrong way. Round two is a calmer, more knowledgeable attempt and usually gets the results I want. I have been dying to own a glorious wreath of flowers for ages ages ages, so I figured I would make one myself, and hopefully, all in one attempt.
It is not difficult to make one of these things, it really isn't. There's a great tutorial for it here but I'm sure everyone's clever enough to figure out how to do it by themselves. All you need are fake flowers, some garden wire and a pair of pliers. The great thing about this is that it can be very cheap, I borrowed some pliers from a friend and the flowers and wire only cost £6 altogether.
I didn't cover the whole wire in flowers, I'm planning on finishing it off my wrapping the exposed wire with some ribbon. I am very chuffed with my new headgear, yet one question remains: where and when do I wear it?

The Orientalism Trend
Posted by
Olivia
Colour blocking, seventies revival and midi lengths are all big this spring season. But cropping up at shows such as John Galliano and Louis Vuitton there have been nudges towards a different direction: the East. Models strutted down catwalks in opulent jewel-toned kimonos, brandishing bamboo parasols and fluttering fans before their cat-like lashes.
But how can we interpret this look without looking like we're meant to be an extra in a production of The Mikado?
Firstly, keep things to a minimum- perhaps choose one aspect of the orientalism trend and integrate it into your wardrobe with some Western flair.
For the summer festivals by the beach...
Keep things loose and relaxed with a crocheted kimono and a wide-brimmed hat. Platform wedges and another layer to the geisha vibe.
For art galleries and roof terrace bars in the big city...
Make it minimal - a lux tee wrapped up inside a bright skirt with an obi belt.
For picnics and bicycle rides through idyllic countryside...
Is this cheating? Rodarte featured some pieces that gave a nod to dreamy royal blue scenes on white porcelain this season. Pair this sweet dress with even sweeter mary janes, and serve the cucumber sandwiches.
Any other trends that you think have been overshadowed this season?

Summer Essentials: Braids
Posted by
Olivia
There's something so girlish and elegant about braids. Whether they're intricately woven over your crown, or trailing down your back like a scorpion tail, they are deceptively simple, and beautiful.
There are just so many ways to braid your hair. I am overwhelmed by the amount of different techniques out there!
The easiest one to do is a straight forward, thick braid made from just separating your hair into thirds, and going from there. Keep braiding until you reach the last inch of hair, and secure with a small, see-through elastic. As for the top of your head - the messier, the better.
Wrap two (or more) braids round your head, and pin them in place, creating a kind of wreath. Flower crown optional, but highly recommended for full effect.
Or, you could go all 'Pippi Longstocking', and have a neat pair of plaits swinging down from your ears. Accessorise with, ahem, long stockings.
If you're feeling a little more adventurous, you could always to interpret the 'Princess Leia'. Slight variation: make them a little higher up, like Mickey Mouse ears, à la Bjork.
Or, feed some pipe cleaners through them and just go nuts.
There are so many tutorials for braids on youtube, I highly recommend you check them out! Happy braiding!

Mad March

I could be all cliché and say, "Ooh, March! Where does the time go?", instead I'm just going to say thank goodness it's here!
After slaving away in the library for the past three days almost non-stop (two essays to hand in for the same day!!?!?) I am free, and ready to embrace spring wholeheartedly. It's super sunny here in Scotland, albeit a bit nippy here and there sometimes. But there's nothing like a few crocuses and daffodils to cheer you up, and lets face it: we all need it.
Either I'm wrong in thinking of palm beaches and 'Club Tropicana drinks are freee....' or they're still in winter mode. Seems that at least one of us has caught the March Madness.

Summer Essentials: A Straw Hat
Posted by
Olivia
In times of great student poverty, I thought I was going to have to swear off shopping until June, at least! Luckily, a forgotten Topshop gift card came to my aid. This was a golden opportunity. With only £30 to spend, I had to choose wisely. Thankfully, I marched in with a good idea of what I wanted: a wide-brimmed, floppy straw hat. And I found one.
Hats are a great way of adding a whole new dimension to an outfit - and I really love the one I bought. A wide, round, floppy brim gives a perfect frame for your face, and such an air of effortless style!
I've complied some inspiring looks below to give you an idea of how I want to be wearing mine:

Find the sources for these images here. I'll be updating with more of what I consider to be 'summer essentials' soon. What do you see yourself wearing this summer?

Derhy

The Derhy Spring and Summer catalogue fell out of my copy of ELLE today. I have never heard of Derhy - it's a French brand - and after some flicking through the few pages of their lookbook, I have quite fallen in love. There is romance, florals, and a hint of seventies' bohemia... everything that should be part of a spring and summer collection, in my opinion.
I scanned in a few of my favourite looks to share here.

John... I'm only dancing!
Can't stop listening to David Bowie at the moment, especially his Young Americans album.
The weather here has been crazy recently - the wind is so strong the rain falls horizontally. Today it held off so I could go out and take some photos.
This is my attempt at a fishtail braid. It's is a bit (ahem, very) messy, but I like it. Seriously, I have been trying for ages to figure out how to do it, everyone said it was so easy but every tutorial I looked at made it the most complicated thing. Turns out, it's dead simple.
The first few snowdrops are beginning to peek out of the ground - I am so excited for the sun to start shining again! I am in the process of making exciting plans for summer already, it seems like everyone is fed up of this winter and is ready for some warmth.
I leave you with Mr. Bowie, covering The Beatles:

January Weekend

Olivia

My mum and sister came to visit this weekend, it was really good to see them! We met up to have a bit of brunch and go shopping. Harriet (sis) totally managed to upstage me on the outfit front. In my defence, I was not expecting a tiny top hat. Doesn't she look ridiculous(ly good!?).

We went to Heller's Kitchen for brunch, they always have yummy food!
Later on in the day we headed into the city centre for a bit of retail therapy. Look at this cute little gingerbread man necklace Harriet picked up in a vintage shop.

I went a bit shopping-happy and bought a fair amount myself. By the end of the day my feet were killing me-- so please explain to me why I then put on five-inch heels in the evening and went out dancing? (Looking good hurts). I limped home unceremoniously with my boyfriend's shoes on and a box of salty chips in my hand. Glamorous, no?
Anyway, Monday is creeping up on me, I've got to tidy my room because clothes are everywhere and it stresses me out!
Enjoy what's left of the weekend!

Lost and Found

Olivia
Once upon a time in Scotland, it was a very, very snowy day. I skipped into my back garden with but a dress and a blanket on to take some magical, wintery photographs (this seemed to make sense to me, uh, I was being artistic). I thought nothing of the fact that, as I was taking these pictures, I happened to drop my house keys into the snow.

Now, this doesn't sound like a big deal, but when the snow is a foot deep, it is.
I consequently lost my keys. At first, I was adamant that I'd find them. I went out often, trawled through the snow; alas, to no avail. I waited for the snow to melt (this took about a month, lawd) and searched again. The ice was too thick.
Now, about two months later... we are reunited (they're a little rusty)!

Ah yes, and I took a couple of outfit photos while I was at it (wearing a little more than last time!).

Definitely loving the Gossip Girl feel to this look. The pictures didn't come out quite so sharp as I realised at the last minute that the camera was on the wrong setting! Infuriating, however not as bad as those times when you find out you have been shooting without a memory card-- been there.
Anyhoo, time to get reading up on Nationalism in the 19th Century! Wee!

Ombre: Jumping on the Bandwagon
Posted by
Olivia

It's been a slow week. My apologies!
I haven't been out taking pictures recently, I've had some uni work to catch up with etc, but hopefully we can get back on track next week!
I'll be adding a little more of my own life to ILTWYL, I started this blog thinking I could be some kind of superhuman-zoom-lady traversing the campus snapping pictures of everyone constantly, but I now realise that perhaps I'd like to soften things up a bit with excerpts of my own life, maybe adding in what I've been wearing, yadda yadda yadda...
Anyway, so for the past week or so I've been toying with the idea of going all ombre on my hair. Yesterday I bought some bleach and basically slapped it on the ends. I have never really dyed my hair, so it was strong enough to take a good bleaching. I'm pleased with how it turned out.
